When some of the world’s largest shippers need their goods moved, they turn to Transplace – an elite provider of transportation management services and logistics technology.  Yet when Transplace found its own internal business processes stuck in the slow lane, they chose Workflow Director from BP Logix to get them moving!

In particular, the manual process for paying contracted carriers was labor and time intensive.  ”It came down to relying on users to let us know that Transplace had received the legal documents we required,” said Vince Biddlecome, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Transplace. “There was room for manual errors that we wanted to eliminate.”

Workflow Director – which Biddlecome calls ‘cost-effective and unparalleled in functionality” – was implemented in less than two months, allowing Transplace to image and store all carrier contracts, customer contacts and pricing documents. Transplace quickly benefitted from reduced time spent processing invoice-related documents, the ability to retrieve documents more quickly and allowing customers to access documents themselves.

Read the entire Transplace case study and understand why Biddlecome says, “Our experience with BP Logix has as much to do with what makes the product superior as it does with the BP Logix team itself. We think of them as more than just a software company – they are our partners.”

Workflow Director from BP Logix is Web-based software that provides storage, categorization and search capabilities for all documents, electronic forms (eForms) and workflow processes and provides visibility into business processes.

It probably comes as no surprise that The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the largest research organization in the world specializing in mental illness, has many activities that involve the processing of paperwork. As a government organization, forms and documents often require multiple approvals and signatures, lengthening the time for the process to complete.

Realizing the need for a better way to manage the processing of these documents, NIMH’s chief information officer John Harris went looking for a workflow software solution.

”Government Agency Speeds Document Handling,” an article written by Brian Albright and published in the December 2009 edition of Integrated Solutions, explores how NIMH has streamlined its internal document processes with an automated workflow software solution — Workflow Director from BP Logix.

BP Logix has released Process Director, which is designed to integrate project planning and BPM. Process Director enables business users to define and model sophisticated business processeactivity listss through a project management-like interface. Some business processes are non-linear, meaning that activities are not performed in any specific order. Rather they are dependent on other work being completed. Writing these “processes” effectively requires project management methods rather than traditional workflow modeling tools.

Process Director — a new solution from BP Logix available on Oct. 19 — is designed for creating activity-based business processes, according to an article posted today on the  Software Development Times web site.  Process Director, which  uses a proprietary .NET-based state machine to run the activity-based process, exists as a layer on top of BPM and workflow software functions.

Jason Woodruff, project manager for TLT-Babcock, Inc., discovered that tracking the status and approval of paper forms was becoming increasingly time-consuming and error-prone. The form data was occasionally incomplete or inaccurate, tracking open issues was complex and resource-intensive and document control practices were becoming more cumbersome and inefficient.

“We needed a solution that would address all of these issues,” Woodruff said, “without creating additional work for the end users.”

TLT-Babcock, Inc.  – a provider of engineered-to-order fans for the power, tunnel and mining industries – decided on Workflow Director from BP Logix as the solution.  Woodruff talks about his Workflow Director project in a product review featured in the Sept./Oct. 2009  edition of Information Management Magazine.

According to Woodruff, Workflow Director has allowed his company to adopt a “best of breed” approach to integrating three legacy software systems, using Workflow Director as the “front end.”

Bruce Lawrence of IDEX Corp. has to look at the “big picture.” As group network manager for five international companies, Lawrence and his team are responsible for IT initiatives, including business processes and application integration.  When IDEX wanted to update intranet-based documents to reflect changing business processes, Lawrence discovered that their existing system could not accommodate those change — leaving employees feeling frustrated.

“Among my criteria was a product that would not require IT to do extensive backend development—and one that could roll out quickly,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence needed a product that would enable IDEX users to make changes easily and also would be scalable and deployable out of the box.  IDEX selected Workflow Director from BP Logix, Inc. (www.bplogix.com).

Lawrence shares more about his intranet initiative and the productivity gains achieved in an article published in the September/October 2009 issue of Intranets, published by Information Today, Inc. Today’s economy continues to challenge companies to do more with fewer resources, making the fusion of business processes and practices both relevant and necessary. Business analysts are often called upon to wear multiple hats — serving as both process/project architects and business owners.  They need tools that enable them to move seamlessly between managing business processes, as well as the activities or projects that comprise the process. They need tools that enable them to transform knowledge of their business into manageable and efficient processes.

In a recent Modern Analyst.com article — “Driving Business Efficiency: The Fusion of Process and Project Management”  — BP Logix senior project manager Buffy Schnurbusch explores what capabilities and functionality a “fused” tool must provide to manage both processes and projects. University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, one of the Midwest’s top public universities, has selected BP Logix Workflow Director. Collaboration and research are key to UWEC’s national reputation. The selection was made to address UW-Eau Claire’s need to automate workflow and approval of key payroll, personnel and human resources forms.

“UW-Eau Claire is a perfect example of an educational institution that will benefit from a system that enables users to effectively develop their own workflows and electronic forms, while also more efficiently routing, tracking, managing and auditing its processes,” said Edward Skiko, CEO of BP Logix.

The University expects to begin deploying its initial group of forms based on Workflow Director in early May, as it concurrently evaluates Lean manufacturing and the value stream mapping process. Follow their implementation journey at UWEC diary.
